Deputy City Attorney/Associate Attorney

The firm is currently recruiting a mid-senior level attorney with a minimum of four (4) years of municipal law experience who enjoys working on a wide range of legal issues to join our collegial and dynamic team to serve as a Deputy City Attorney for the City of Santa Cruz and as an Associate with ABC LAW.

Responsibilities are providing comprehensive legal services in transactional and/or litigation matters including: the Brown Act, CEQA, land use, planning, affordable housing, contracts, construction, constitutional law, Public Records Act, premises liability, eminent domain, code enforcement, etc.

Law Fellow

The firm offers a one-year fellowship for a highly qualified recent law school graduate to assume the responsibility of a junior associate, gain valuable hands-on experience, and have direct client contact. 

Law fellows will work closely with and receive mentorship from firm attorneys and have a great opportunity to learn how to practice in all areas of municipal and public entity law, including both transactional and litigation matters. Transactional matters may include attendance at public meetings, drafting ordinances and resolutions, performing legal research, reviewing and drafting contracts, and providing advice regarding the myriad of legal issues public entities encounter on a daily basis, including the Brown Act, Public Records Act, Political Reform Act, CEQA, and land use. Litigation responsibilities may include preparation of pleadings, drafting discovery requests and responses, and performing legal research in all areas of litigation, including dangerous condition, civil rights, constitutional law, and code enforcement. The firm also represents private clients in business, employment, estate planning, construction, and real estate matters; the law fellow may also be involved in working in these practice areas. 

Applicants should have a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school, a strong academic background, and excellent writing and communication skills.  

The firm expects the Law Fellow will have taken the California Bar exam either before joining the firm or within a few months of starting the fellowship.  

Salary $105,000.  The firm also offers generous benefits with paid medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance.  EOE.

Summer Law Clerk 2025

The firm seeks a 1L or 2L law student who is motivated and wants to gain valuable work experience as a spring extern or a summer law clerk. The externship is a part-time paid position, and the clerkship is a full-time paid position.  The extern or law clerk may choose to work onsite or on a hybrid work schedule.

Legal Support Assistant

The firm is currently recruiting a Legal Support Assistant to join our collegial and dynamic team.

Working in close collaboration with attorneys, paralegals, and the office manager, the Legal Support Assistant, provides administrative support to the legal and administrative team at ABC LAW, as described below.

Legal Administration Responsibilities: Assist in coordinating document review and responses to Public Records Act requests and non-party subpoenas. Collect, examine, and organize evidence and other legal documents for attorney review and case preparation. Research regulations, laws, and legal articles to assist with the preparation of reports, case files, and legal advice. Create and maintain case files. Manage, organize, and maintain documents in paper or electronic filing systems. Perform administrative duties, such as maintaining attorneys’ calendars, scheduling appointments, word processing, and document formatting. Assist in drafting and preparing a variety of litigation documents, such as pleadings, motions, briefs, and other related documents. Assists in filing legal documents with state and federal courts and serves documents on all parties. Assists in preparing and serving discovery related documents. Pre-trial preparation, including organizing and indexing exhibits; preparing trial binders; and serving as liaison between the firm and third parties such as witnesses, clients, vendors, experts and courtroom personnel. Calendar court hearings, appearances, and response dates for attorneys. Compose and prepare routine correspondence and communicates with clients in person, over the phone, and via email. Process receipt, return, and/or delivery of legal and other documents to clients. Assist with photocopying and scanning projects.

Records Maintenance Responsibilities: Create, index (both electronically and physically), maintain, audit, and close case files. Organize and maintain paper file spaces. Coordinate transfer and retrieval of paper files with outside record storage facility and maintain records of off-site files. Locate, retrieve, deliver, and track files, documents, and boxes as requested. Ensure compliance with retention/destruction procedures as set by management.

Job Expectations: Excellent verbal and writing skills with a high attention to detail are required. Ability to work in a professional environment that requires a high level of confidentiality. Adaptability to multi-task, work efficiently and competently with a high degree of accuracy. Ability to adapt to shifting priorities and meet deadlines. Work collaboratively as part of a team. Positive attitude.

Qualifications: 3-5 years of relevant legal assistant and records experience. Experience working in a fast-paced legal environment and with multiple attorneys simultaneously. Must demonstrate a strong knowledge of both federal and state court rules and calendaring experience (e-filing experience required). Possess advanced computer skills and proficiency with Outlook, Office 365 products, and Adobe Acrobat.
